How to Find the Best Alternative Healing Practitioner for You Now and Avoid Scams
Congratulations! You are determined to heal whatever chronic condition you are dealing with. You know, deep down, that you can heal even though you have been told countless times that you can’t.
You’ve raised your awareness to know there are alternative solutions available, but the options are overwhelming and often confusing. This can make it difficult to find the gems amongst all of the practitioners and methods among the ones that are ineffective or even harmful.
Perhaps you’ve already met someone that didn’t have your best interests at heart. The fancy marketing and big promises were followed up with smooth talking and deceitful manipulation. Getting burnt in this way is traumatic and can get you to think everyone in the industry is a fraud.
I get it. I’ve been there and it isn’t pleasant. That’s why I am writing this article: to help you discern who the best healer for you to work with now is. We are going to look at what makes a great healer, the process of selecting the ideal practitioner for you now, and key questions you should ask every practitioner you are considering working with.
What Makes a Great Healer?

The most important thing to look for in a healer is results. Not just results they’ve helped others attain, but the results they’ve obtained for themselves. Would you seek advice from a personal trainer that doesn’t work out? No, you would look for someone that has the results that you are looking to gain for yourself.
There are a number of modalities out there that teach people how to heal, but one of the traps I see practitioners fall into is that they give their power away to the modality itself. They may have felt relief from using it, but stop using for their own healing. Instead, they use it as a business opportunity and promise they can heal others. This is the same as that personal trainer that never works out.
The truth is, you can only heal yourself. Your body is designed to heal. This doesn’t mean you have to do it all on your own. We are here to be in service to each other and help our brothers and sisters on their journey. A healer that has healed what you are currently struggling with can help you see what you need to do to heal.
A great healer is going to listen to you. They are going to ask you questions about where you are currently, the results you desire to gain, and what you have tried to do in order to get those results. They aren’t going to let you complain and blame because they know that those behaviors aren’t going to help you heal. They are going to keep the conversation and sessions on track and focused on what is going to help you heal.
They are going to be open and transparent with any questions that you have for them. You have the right to get to know them and feel comfortable with them before you hire them. We are going to get into the questions to ask them later.
A great healer practices what they preach. They should be able to confidently demonstrate that they walk their talk. Some of their answers may intimidate you because some of the greatest healers I’ve met have made healing and spiritual growth their lifestyle. This means that they might spend more than half of their waking time dedicated to their practice and that doesn’t include time they spend guiding others. This doesn’t mean you have to put this much time and energy in for you to get the outcome you desire. This dedication isn’t where they began. I started with fifteen minutes a day. It turned into a lifestyle when I discovered my purpose.
You get to decide how much time, energy, and money you are investing in your healing. They are going to be directly proportional to the results you are looking for. Changing your eating habits may only take a few classes and the time required to plan and prepare your meals, whereas aligning your mind and body with spirit may take significantly more. Start with where you are at and go from there.
The last thing I would like to mention about a great healer is that you are going to resonate with them. This is a feeling that you get that they are authentic and their intentions are aligned with your best interests of healing. Do not confuse resonance with the emotions that come from love bombing and the excitement of dreaming about big promises.
How to Select the Best Practitioner for You
First and foremost, KNOW what outcome you desire to get from working with someone. You wouldn’t call a plumber to fix your broken fence. You would call a handyman or someone that specializes in fence repair. The same applies when you are looking for someone to help you with healing. If your main concern right now is lower back pain, you aren’t going to call a nutritionist.
It is best to be as specific as you can with the result you desire. With the lower back pain, you may desire the outcome to be pain free. You could take it a step further and choose to know what to do to make sure it never comes back. Adding that preventative piece helps you identify which practitioner is going to be a better fit because it will narrow down the list of potential healers.

Now that you have the outcome you are looking for in mind, it is time to look for the alternative healthcare professional that is going to be perfect for you. Just like you would select a contractor to fix your fence, price is going to be a factor. Make sure you add your budget into the outcome you desire. It is always a best practice to interview multiple candidates in order to make a well informed decision.
Most contractors will provide a free consultation to determine how much the job will cost. Alternative healing practitioners should offer the same. Schedule consultations with at least 3 people, keeping in mind what you are looking for in a great healer and the red flags to watch out for. Healing requires calm and peace, so any high pressure sales techniques are antithetical to healing. Treat these calls like an interview and feel free to use the questions shared in the next section of this blog. Your main goal here is to find the one that you resonate with most. They may not necessarily have the lowest price, but that’s ok, most practitioners are flexible with their pricing the same way contractors are. Be open with each of them that you are interviewing multiple healers and be clear about how and when you will follow up with them.
Now that you have talked with three you have a better feel for what is offered, so it is time to call 3 more. Treat this round much the same but you can begin asking more about price flexibility and the specifics of the offer. Most practitioners work 1-on-1 and some work with groups. Others may have courses to help you if you are looking for more of a do-it-yourself approach. You are looking to compare the time, energy, and money that would go into working with them and these could vary widely among different healers.
If you feel confident that you would like to work with 1 of them at their asking price, then it is time to call them back. If you aren’t confident yet, continue calling 3 more until you are. When you call the preferred candidate back, let them know that you would like to work with them, but their price was a little higher than other healers. Ask if their price is negotiable. If not, hire them at the price they are asking. If they are, negotiate the price, and then hire them. Follow up with the other candidates by email or message to thank them for their time and let them know you have decided to go with another option.
If the healer you resonate with most is out of your budget, you can message them before calling anyone to let them know that you would really like to work with them, but can’t right now due to your budget. If there is no one else on your list that you felt comfortable with you can call 3 more. If there is a backup, wait one day for the out of budget healer to respond. They may offer a discount, but do not expect it. Call the next in line.
Keep at this until you have hired someone to work with. It may only be for a single session, a yearlong program, or something in between. It’s the outcome you are looking for that is going to determine what the format, modality, and healer is going to be like. This is an important decision so it is worth doing it correctly.
Questions to Ask a Healer Before You Hire Them

As I mentioned earlier, genuine healers aren’t going to be afraid to answer any questions that you have about their practice. In fact, they should invite questions. Your purpose in this consultation is to find someone you feel is going to be able to help you achieve the end result you are determined to create. All of your questions should be aligned with this purpose.
You may choose to ask all, some, or your own questions during the consultation call with a prospective provider.
- Why did you choose to become a healing practitioner?
- How long have you been doing this professionally?
- What have you healed in yourself using the method(s) you are proposing to share with me?
- Do you have references available I could talk to who have used your services?
These questions should be easy for them to answer if they are being open and honest. There are no right or wrong answers because we are only asking for the truth. If they dance around a question or seem nervous in answering it, that is a sign they may not be aligned with the purpose of getting you the result you desire and are more likely just looking for a sale.
Some of the answers they give may lead to more questions. If you aren’t clear or something they said was confusing, make sure to ask what they meant by that.
Let’s look a little deeper into each of these questions.
The first question is going to help you see their motivations. The best answers are going to be the ones that share their story. Responses to be wary of are going to be short or vague, often stating their main desire is to help other people. While it is noble to help others, this response often indicates that they are avoiding doing the work on themselves.
Questions 2 and 3 basically go together. They should be able to confidently answer question 2 whether it has been 20 years or 20 days. Lookout for practitioners that gloat based on their many years of service or newer providers that try to justify their newness. The best answers are going to be matter of fact. Question 3 is the one to listen to. All healing is self-healing, so they should be able to list the conditions they’ve been able to overcome. Watch out for anyone that avoids answering this one directly.
The last question is a common practice in most service businesses, but not so much with alternative healing. Testimonials and case studies seem to be the predominant marketing to gain your trust, but these can never replace the confidence gained from being able to talk with someone live and ask questions directly.
